Summary of MRFH Newsletter – December 2023

This edition reflects on a productive year for the Murray Region Forestry Hub, outlining governance changes, key achievements and sector priorities.

A new Steering Committee has been established to guide project priorities and strategy. Three main focus areas were identified: fire management, improving road infrastructure and strengthening community engagement.

Key 2023 outputs include a skills survey addressing workforce shortages, a land capability report examining plantation expansion challenges and a socio-economic study assessing post-bushfire industry impacts.

Policy and industry updates include Victoria’s new biosecurity strategy, backed by funding and stakeholder collaboration to manage future risks. Economic insights show slow growth, rising interest rates and declining household spending, with softwood sales and imports also trending downward.

Infrastructure and transport improvements continue through the SLGAAP program, supporting better heavy vehicle access. The National Reconstruction Fund Corporation has launched, focusing on investment in key industries while excluding native forest logging.

Additional updates include the release of a national heavy vehicle network map and upcoming industry events.
