Skills and Training Analysis

The Murray Region Forestry Hub plays a vital role in supporting one of Australia’s most significant softwood plantation regions, contributing more than $1.3 billion annually to the economy and sustaining thousands of jobs across New South Wales and Victoria.

Following the 2019–20 bushfires and major industry changes, the sector faces pressing challenges in workforce capacity, skills shortages, and the need to adapt to new technologies. With an ageing workforce and ongoing demand for skilled roles such as machine operators, foresters, truck drivers, and technicians, the Hub has taken a proactive step to better understand the current and future skills needed to keep the industry strong.

This project, commissioned by the Murray Region Forestry Hub and delivered by ForestWorks, provides a detailed assessment of workforce gaps, training opportunities, and barriers to recruitment and retention. Drawing on extensive industry surveys, interviews, and census data, the analysis identifies priority areas for skills development—from digital and technology capabilities to leadership, safety, and specialised technical training. The findings will inform strategies to strengthen partnerships between industry, government, and training providers, ensuring the region has a safe, skilled, and adaptable workforce to meet future challenges and opportunities.
