Risk Management Project (Land Capability) additional access to combined data

The Murray Region Forestry Hub Land Capability Assessment conducted by PF Olsen and Spatial Vision analysed north-east Victoria and southern NSW to identify areas suitable for future plantation expansion.

Using climate, soil, topography, and infrastructure data, the study modelled biophysical suitability and land exclusions to create detailed maps and an interactive tool. Key influences on plantation success included rainfall, frost risk, slope, and soil type, with additional constraints from zoning, public land, and proximity to processing facilities.

The study found approximately 185,000 hectares of land currently highly suitable for radiata pine plantations, concentrated around Wangaratta, Benalla, and Tumut. However, under projected climate change scenarios, this area could decline significantly—to below 80,000 hectares by 2090 in moderate conditions and less than 30,000 hectares under a worst-case scenario. The report provides vital guidance for long-term forestry planning, highlighting the need for adaptive management and investment in sustainable plantation development across the Murray Region.
