The Murray Region Forestry Hub (MRFH) is a regional, not-for-profit organisation that brings together forestry businesses, governments, councils, researchers, and community stakeholders to support a strong, sustainable plantation forestry and wood-products sector in our region.
The Hub identifies barriers to growth, helps coordinate solutions, and provides regional advice to the Australian Government.
MRFH was formed under the Australian Government’s National Forest Industries Plan to help grow forestry in key regions.
Its job is to work locally on practical issues—like transport efficiency, workforce needs, land suitability, and community engagement—so forestry can keep supporting jobs and renewable timber supply over the long term.
The Hub includes a mix of members and partners across the supply chain and community. Members include local councils, plantation managers, harvesting and haulage representatives, major timber processors, and government agencies.
This broad membership helps the Hub tackle regional challenges from forest to freight to processing.
The Hub region covers about 3.5 million hectares across southern NSW and north-east Victoria—east of the Hume Freeway and west of the Great Dividing Range.
Key forestry towns include Tumut, Batlow, Tumbarumba, Gundagai and Adelong in NSW, plus Corryong, Tallangatta, Myrtleford and Wangaratta in Victoria.
MRFH is funded mainly by the Australian Government through the Regional Forestry Hubs program. Funding supports regional studies, strategic planning, and practical projects that help improve productivity, investment, safety, and sustainability in forestry and wood products.
The Hub focuses on sustainable softwood plantation growth, better freight and haulage safety, strong local jobs and skills pathways, and clear community communication. It also supports evidence-based planning for future plantations and resilience to climate and bushfire risks.
MRFH aims to build community understanding and trust by sharing clear information, listening to concerns, and connecting people to the right forest managers or regulators. The Hub’s partnership model supports respectful engagement, including with Traditional Owners, to ensure forestry planning recognises cultural and community values.
The Hub doesn’t own forests or run harvesting operations. Instead, it acts as a regional coordinator and advisor. It brings stakeholders together, commissions regional studies, helps develop solutions, and provides advice to government to strengthen the whole forestry sector and its relationship with the community.
